Beer is not at its best here, but pretty decent, as long as you avoid some Swedish brands. While Spendrups and Pripps are ok, avoid Åbro unless you are really desperate. A standard Swedish draft beer is 40 cl. Best beer selection is at Het Amsterdamtje on Odinsgatan, but they are rather badly located in town. The main pub areas are along Kunsportsavenyen and Linnégatan. Good places include Linnéterassen, Bryggeriet, Lilla London, Brasserie Julien, Babar, Dancing Dingo, The Dubliner, Bitter, Rumpan Bar, The Old Beefeater.

Good news for beer drinkers. 'Plus' is now called 'Linnéterrassen' and has reduced its beer prices to 29 kroner which makes it the cheapest in town not at Chalmers. Since it is also a really nice place that can hold large groups, there is no particular reason not to go drinking there. It also serves reasonably priced food. Same great chefs in the kitchen. It's on Linnégatan (surprise)at the Princegatan tram stop. Note: you do have to climb stairs to get to the Terrace, so _look up_! The 6 tram goes there. Or walk from Järntorget (only about 2 blocks). The 3 6 9 and 11 trams go there.

We plan to go beerdrinking:

Place: Linnéterrassen

Some more info

We still have high alcohol taxes and a sales monopoly on anything with more than 3.5% alcohol. Lately, a lot of foreign brewers have started to make 3.5% versions of their beer, so you can get Czech beer or things like Bishops Finger in ordinary stores if you don't mind that last %... But watch out for class I. That's almost alcohol free. It's as weak as some american beer tastes!

The cheapest beer at the monopoly stores is about 1 euro for a half litre. These stores have a good selection, but the better beer will cost more of course. See http://www.systembolaget.se/

Beer is "öl" in Swedish.

Beer prices (40 cl "real" beer) in Göteborg can be seen at http://www2.aos.se/etc/barsbors/gbg.asp but I'm not sure it's uptodate. The cheapest beer is at "John L's Pub" which is at Chalmers.

Something you can conclude from the pub beer price list above is that you should avoid the main street "Avenyn" if you want to drink (or eat) without spending so much money (although some places seem to have relatively cheap beer until 10 pm).

Close to Linnégatan is Andra långgatan, where you can find The Rover, which has good ale, and Kellys, which is cheap (also 29 kronor).
